The Parkside Historic Preservation Corporation (PHPC) is a non-profit community development corporation, specializing in historic preservation. PHPC was established in 1983 in order to spearhead the revitalization of West Philadelphia’s historic Parkside neighborhood—listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PHPC also seeks to attract new investment to the community, and to create sustainable economic opportunities for area residents through affordable housing, construction-related and permanent employment, and delivery of human services.

To date, PHPC has authentically restored 20 Victorian-era mansions along Parkside Avenue, containing approximately 200 apartments, rented at affordable rates. PHPC has rehabilitated and rents these properties using minimal direct subsidies. Its other projects include community strategic planning and development of a Parkside comprehensive plan, coordination of the Centennial District, an award-winning community garden, participation in the renewal of the Philadelphia Stars Negro Baseball League diamond and monument, and partnerships in establishing special-needs housing.

Mayor Edward G. Rendell and the Bruner Foundation honor PHPC’s preservation work in 1999.

PHPC’s efforts have been lauded in Historic Preservation and its projects have received awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Bruner Foundation, the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, Commerce Bank/Philadelphia Business Journal, and the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

PHPC is an active partner with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Philadelphia Zoo, Please Touch Museum, Mann Center for the Performing Arts, and Philadelphia Health Management Corporation.

Over the years, the work of PHPC has engendered a greater sense of community and local investment. PHPC’s numerous honors, as well as continued coverage in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, and Philadelphia Tribune have brought the eyes of the region to Parkside. PHPC is committed to creating a prosperous, livable community, while preserving and celebrating the rich architectural heritage of this historic neighborhood.
